The studio version of Lady Gaga‘s ‘Glitter & Grease’ has finally leaked. The song was the only unreleased jam that Gaga performed on her Monster Ball tour back in 2010, with little monsters clamoring for Gaga to drop the studio version in some form. It’s now spreading on the web.
The song was penned by Gaga and her onetime boyfriend and former producer Rob Fusari, with whom she had a not-so-nice split. He’s been threatening to release unfinished tracks from their work together for a while, while ‘Reel Cool’ actually did land online.
According to Gagapedia, the song is reportedly about the Mother Monster’s on-again, off-again relationship with Luc Carl, who appears to have loved his watermelon green Chevy El Camino more than his girlfriend!
Gaga sings about the car and the relationship, saying, “He tells that he loves me / And even though I’m real sexy / He loves his car, car, car / He’s always with his car / Car / Car / So I rub that glitter and grease around.” A sweet set of wheels can be a cruel mistress.
The song is the same synth pop — heavy on the ’80s, nu wave energy — that populates ‘The Fame’ and ‘The Fame Monster,’ and damn if it’s not catchy. If this actually made it onto the original version of either, it would have been right at home.
It reminded us of Gwen Stefani‘s ‘Hollaback Girl,’ with its baby-voiced sass and strong, sexy girl swagger.
While it sucks to think that Carl was more interested in his ride than his girlfriend at one point, it’s certainly a metaphorical dance song. Carl also recently spoke highly of his ex, recounting their breakup, saying, “Her life, needless to say, completely changed, and I’m not the type of guy who can sit on someone else’s yacht sipping champagne. Unfortunately, to date someone who is never in the same country, let alone zip code, you had better be rich or be willing to live off of their money. I was neither.” He also said she is amazing and wishes her nothing but the best.
At least his influence on Gaga’s life made it into a super catchy, sexy and synthy dance song. Rub that glitter & grease round, lil’ monsters.
