Justin Bieber is a national treasure in his native Canada and now, the country is proving its admiration, as the singer was awarded with the Diamond Jubilee medal by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Friday, Nov. 23 in Ottawa.
The Biebs was heavily criticized for his attire when accepting the award, since he looked sloppy, street and unkempt — hardly clothing becoming a Diamond Jubilee medal recipient, wearing a baggy coveralls, with one of the straps unhooked. Where was the swag, swag, swag? It was replaced by sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.
The medal was created to mark the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne of England. 60,000 Canadians will receive the honor. The Biebs, a native of Ontario, was just one of the folks given the award.
So why are people receiving the medals? Those who have contributed significantly to Canadian culture have been bestowed with said honor. Despite not dressing for the occasion, the Biebs is certainly deserving of the award, since he has become a pop music icon.
Harper himself tweeted about meeting with Bieber, posting, “Was happy to present @justinbieber with a Diamond Jubilee Medal today.”
We just wish that the ‘Boyfriend’ hitmaker would have cleaned up and wore something a little more classy or polished for his acceptance of the award. The swag was a bit absent. The Biebs should have asked himself a simple question before accepting this honor: What would Michael Jackson do?
