On tonight’s (Nov 28) episode of ‘X Factor,’ the Top 8 performed No. 1 hits, which is a broad category to choose from, making judges Britney Spears, Demi Lovato, Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid proud, since the stakes are higher. There were a few standouts — someone with the initials CRS and the country singer — and some that were good. There was one that wasn’t that great at all. Find out which acts fit each of our teaser descriptions.
TEAM BRITNEY SPEARS:
Diamond White: She does ballads, so she turned Whitney Houston‘s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ into a ballad, at least for the first verse and chorus. She eventually transformed it into a modern version of Donna Summer‘s ‘Last Dance,’ speeding it up for the second half. It was okay, but it did show she can sing anddance.
Carly Rose Sonenclar: She topped the leaderboard last week and came out swinging again with Adele‘s ‘Rolling in the Deep’ in order to raise the bar a notch. She certainly doesn’t sound like a teenager with that smoky voice. The beginning was a bit too slow, but she picked up the pace and crushed it. She’s a star.
TEAM DEMI LOVATO:
Paige Thomas: She places lower when there is a big production during her performances. She does better when vulnerable and pared down, as her mentor told her, but Thomas wants to go big. She certainly doesn’t do what Lovato tells her, so they had to compromise a bit. Her rendition of ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ was likely her best of the competition.
CeCe Frey: She is constantly in the bottom, so she and her mentor needed to figure out what’s wrong and how to fix it. Her loud rendition of ‘Lady Marmalade’ didn’t solve the problem; it created more. This perf will likely get her sent home. Sorry, CeCe. We think you’re a cutie.
TEAM SIMON COWELL:
Fifth Harmony: They turned in a good -but not great, rendition of Kelly Clarkson‘s ‘What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger)’ amidst one of the members dealing with the loss of a family remember.
Emblem3: The boys, who are what you’d get if you harvested One Direction and Hot Chelle Rae DNA in a petri dish to create something new, performed ‘I’m a Believer,’ on which they dropped killer harmonies that had the teenybopper girls in the crowd shrieking. It was good and cute, and cute and good.
TEAM L.A. REID:
Vino Alan: The muscular, tattooed soul singer stumbled with ‘You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,’ which wasn’t his fault entirely, since his mentor changed the song at last minute since he didn’t like how previous rehearsals were going. So that was a challenge.
Tate Stevens: The country singer ripped through Keith Urban‘s ‘Somebody Like You,’ an upbeat country song fit for a hoedown or rodeo. He showed his fun, fast-moving side.
Tune in tomorrow (Nov. 29) to find out which two acts are outta here.
