Let’s get it out of the way now. Yes, the first 20 seconds and the intro of One Direction‘s new single ‘Best Song Ever,’ which factors into their ‘This Is Us’ documentary trailer and precedes their next album, sounds like the Who’s classic ‘Baba O’Riley.’ It has to be intentional and an homage, since it’s that obvious. But that’s where the similarities end, people.
So, no, there’s no mention of a “teenage wasteland” or any sort of social issues moving forward. It was, however, refreshing to have 1D throw us for a loop there.
Once the 20-second “tribute” (or rip-off, depending on ‘Who’ you ask) is over and done with, it morphs into a signature 1D track. The boys harmonize smoothly and celebrate dancing all night to the best song ever. It’s flirty, fluffy and fun. So in essence, it’s what you expect from Harry, Zayn, Liam, Louis and Niall at this point.
It’s a balanced song, vocally speaking, as we hear all the boys and their voices. It doesn’t feel like any of the 1Ders take the lead, instead choosing to share the mic equally.
‘Best Song Ever’ is anthemic, as are most 1D songs, but could it really be anything else with a title like that?
There’s some synths in the chant and the singalong that comes at the 2:15 mark. It’s a song that is perfect for prom, the 8th grade dance and any other teen rites of passage that you can think of.
It sounds like it’s Zayn Malik gettin’ his falsetto on at the end, around the 2:58 mark through the fade out, too.
‘Best Song Ever’ is a cute and cray cray catchy 1D song that embeds itself in your memory the more you listen to it. It’s also one of those songs that you needn’t overthink. Listen to it because it feels good. After all, isn’t that what music is about in its purest form?
The song is a pop gem that’s not quite as catchy as ‘Live While We’re Young’ or ‘Kiss You,’ nor is it 1D’s best song ever. Still, it’s pretty freakin’ good.
