The biggest-selling Latin albums of 2012 were mostly supplied by young, emerging stars, with Romeo SantosPrince Royce and 3BallMTY leading the sales list, according to Billboard‘s year-end recap.
The year’s top-selling album was Santos’ bachata record ‘Formula: Vol. 1,’ which spawned four No. 1 hits on the Hot Latin Songs chart in the past two years, including ‘La Diabla,’ ‘Mi Santa,’ and the Usher-assisted ‘Promise.’ Royce followed at No. 2 with ‘Phase II,’ while Mexican trio 3BallMTY finished third with their debut, ‘Intentalo.’
Each of the top three is a relative newcomer. 3BallMTY just won the Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist from a field of 10 nominees. Royce’s album was only his second, and Santos’ chart-topper was his solo debut, though he created hits for years prior to that as a member of Adventura.
Coming in fourth on the albums list was ‘Joyas Prestadas’ by the late Jenni Rivera, who tragically passed away just last week in a plane crash in Mexico. Puerto Rican reggaeton star Don Omar placed No. 5 with ‘Don Omar Presents MTO2: New Generation.’
A separate list of the top-selling Latin artists of the year, taking into account artists’ entire career output, featured Omar at the top of the list, followed by Shakira in second place.
